He said that humans go through life unconsciously ignoring problems that are as large as a spaceship landing on the pitch at Lord's Cricket Ground. Even Ford Prefect, who knew about S.E.P.s, could only see them out of the corner of his eye while ducking and weaving. It's the 800 pound gorilla. It's re-arranging the deck chairs while the Titanic is sinking. It's the American Way!
